A good first car is boring in the best way: common enough that parts are cheap, simple enough that servicing is predictable, and modern enough to carry a solid safety rating. These are the models that keep meeting all three tests on the Australian used market.
Small hatches that hold up
The Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3 dominate this bracket for good reason: parts availability everywhere, low servicing costs, and strong resale when the time comes to move on. The Hyundai i30 and Kia Cerato offer more equipment for the money, and later examples may still carry the balance of a long factory warranty.
Cheaper still
The Suzuki Swift and MG 3 sit lower again on price and are easy to park and cheap to run. Check service history carefully at this end of the market, because deferred maintenance is common.
What to prioritise over badge
Insurance for a young driver can exceed the difference between two cars, so get quotes before you choose. Prefer a car with electronic stability control, curtain airbags and a good crash rating, and put the remaining budget into fresh tyres and a full service rather than a nicer stereo.
