Ute buyer's guide: HiLux, Ranger, D-MAX and Triton compared

Utes are the most-searched vehicles on the Australian used market, and the four that matter most are the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-MAX and Mitsubishi Triton. They are not interchangeable, and the used examples have very different lives behind them.
Toyota HiLux
Strongest resale of the group, which cuts both ways: you pay more to buy one. Mechanically conservative and easy to service anywhere in the country. On earlier 2.8-litre diesels, check for a documented DPF history and confirm the vehicle has done regular highway running rather than only short suburban trips.
Ford Ranger
The best on-road drive of the four, with a comfortable cabin and strong towing manners. Check the transmission service history, look for a documented coolant history on earlier models, and confirm any towing has been within rated limits.
Isuzu D-MAX
Simple, robust and popular with fleets and tradespeople, which means a lot of high-kilometre examples that are nonetheless well maintained. Inspect the tray, chassis rails and towbar mounting for hard use rather than judging on odometer alone.
Mitsubishi Triton
The value pick, usually the cheapest of the four to buy for a given age. Payload and cabin space are behind the leaders, but running costs are low and the capped-price servicing history is often complete.
Checking an ex-work ute
Look underneath for bent or repaired chassis sections, check the towbar for heavy wear, inspect suspension bushes for load fatigue, and see whether the tray or canopy is hiding rust. A tidy tradie ute with 180,000 highway kilometres and a full logbook is often a better buy than a low-kilometre example with no history.
